Family Pictures!

Yay! The photographer just dropped off our family pics, and I LOVE them! Okay, I really needed to lose a few more pounds, but otherwise they're cute. These make me want to send out Christmas cards to everyone we have ever come in contact with. If only postage wasn't so blasted expensive.....

Halloween Fun - mostly....

Lindsey and Emily had a great Halloween! They loved their class parties and going trick-or-treating as Silvermist (Disney fairy) and Ariel. They both really hated their wigs, though. :( Lauren, on the other hand, was miserable. She had the misfortune of catching the H1N1 flu on Thursday. Poor little thing! She ended up missing all the parties and fun - plus cheer competition. She's feeling better today - no fever- but it doesn't make up even a little for missing out on everything else.... She was sooo excited about her costume that she put together with a couple of friends. She's also upset because her evil cheer coach and a few girls were actually mad at her for not competing. Sorry, but someone who can barely stay upright long enough to shower that morning really shouldn't try to make it through a rigorous cheer routine - or toss another girl around in the air. As a cheer coach, I wouldn't allow a girl to do that for her safety and that of her flier. Yes, I'm really peeved about the whole thing.
Anyway.....
Kent, of course, had a ball decorating the yard and entry for the night. He loves getting out all the spookier stuff! He was a great sport about taking the girls around trick-or-treating while I was at the school's Halloween party taking pictures. Lauren got to lie on the couch and hand out candy.
We did make it to Cornbelly's earlier this month. Lauren didn't want to go, so we traded her in for another little girl. No, really. We left her with her BFF, Oakley, and took her little sister, Avery, who also conveniently happens to be friends with Lindsey and Emily. Everyone had more fun this way!
Today, we've already got most of the decorations down....I need another tote for the stuff I bought this year. Oops... :)

Now, bring on Thanksgiving!!!

Witches Night Out!

Witches, witches, everywhere! The girls and I went to the Gardner Village's Witches Night Out with a bunch of friends last night, and it was SPECTACULAR! We did have to stand in line for an hour for food, but the scones were absolutely worth it! What really got me excited, though, were all the AMAZING hats! Oh, my gosh! Those hats were sooooo darling! The little girls loved all the witch displays, and we moms and teens were happiest browsing all the charming shops. Top it all off with gooey, delicious carameled apples, and you have some truly happy witches. Next year, I'm definitely working on making some fabulous hats for us! My favorite "coven" was the group of Red Hatters in full witchy costume. So cute! I didn't have time to snap a picture, though, so you'll just have to take my word for it. If you've never gone before, you really should plan on it for next year.
This is absolutely going to be a new tradition for the Riley Girls!

Lindsey's Baptism

Our sweet, adorable 8 year old was baptized and confirmed yesterday by her Daddy. She was, of course, a little nervous and very excited! She's such a sweet, friendly, little girl! We had almost all of our combined families there to witness this sacred event, including Kent's mom and stepdad from Washington. Lauren gave a cute - and short - talk on baptism in honor of her little sis, and Emily made sure Lindsey got thoroughly dunked. :)
I loved seeing my little Lindsey take this big step on her spiritual journey. I'm not sure how much of it she really understands at this point, but I know that she will eventually grasp the significance of yesterday's events. Right now, the experience of having her (large) family there- just for her- is still a profoundly important message that she is loved tremendously by a lot of people. My hope is that she'll feel and recognize the Holy Spirit's presence strongly in her life, and find comfort in the gift of repentance. The rest will develop over the months and years ahead.

Happy 8th Birthday, Lindsey!

It's official - our little blondie is 8 years old!
Birthdays are huge in the Riley home, and this one was no exception. After I scoured Target's dollar bins for MONTHS to find Hello Kitty trinkets, Lindsey announced that she reeaalllyy wanted a Halloween theme. Hmmmm....Okay. How about a witch party? Can I puuhhlleeesse have a sleepover? I'm old enough now. Plleeeaaasssee, Mommy?

Oh, dear.

So, Friday night, a dozen or so little witchies descended on our (haunted) house for games, goodies, and ghoulish fun. We made candy bracelets, whacked a pinata, hunted for ghosts, and watched a movie until 8 little girls (some got homesick around 10pm) plus 3 teenagers (under the guise of helping with the party) finally fell asleep on the family room floor. One would think that staying up until midnight would make little witchies tired enough to sleep in. One would be very VERY wrong. At the crack of dawn - okay, 7:30 - a great noise woke Kent and I from our slumber. UUggh.
Apparently, little witchies don't know how dangerous it is to wake teenaged witchies from their beauty sleep. Especially by kicking them. Yeah.
All in all, Lindsey proclaimed this birthday to be a success, and immediately began planning her ninth. Meanwhile, we're trying to impress upon her the serious and sacred nature of her upcoming baptism this Saturday.
She just really, really likes her new dress.

Some Excitement at Casa Riley

Just when I think I'm going to be able to keep up with my blog, my modem DIES and I'm without internet for a whole week! So, here's what happened during the WEEK WITHOUT INTERNET ACCESS:
Emily lost her very first tooth! Yay, Emmy! We noticed last Monday at dinner that her new tooth was coming in behind it - OH, NO! So, with the help of her biggest sis and Aunt Amy, Emily managed to wiggle that little wobbler right out. The Tooth Fairy is very generous for first teeth, so Emily was excited to find a $5 bill under her pillow AND she left the tooth for Emmy to show her class.
Lauren had her own bit of excitement the Saturday before last. She spilled a steaming bowl of Top Ramen all over her foot. That doesn't sound so bad, right? Yeah, it probably wouldn't have been, but dear Lauren wasn't supposed to be eating on the couch. So she panicked. Instead of cleaning the boiling hot soup off her foot, she chose to try cleaning up the mess first to possibly avoid being in trouble for eating in the Forbidden Zone. The resulting severe 2nd degree burn turned out to be sufficient punishment. She hasn't worn anything but flip flops for the last 10 days, and actually had to get a doctor's note for it because of the school's dress code. How many kids do you know actually need a prescription for flip flops?
On Friday, the girls and I visited the September 11th Memorial Flag Field in Sandy. I didn't think that, 8 years later, hearing the speech President Bush gave that day, or seeing all those flags could still make me cry. But they still do. Lauren and I talked about what happened that day, and what it meant to our country. Even the little girls walked reverently through the flags, holding hands. I really pray that they all grow up with the same freedom's and opportunities that we've enjoyed thus far.....

All 3 girls are back in school at the charter school. Yep, even Lauren by her choice. She occasionally waffles back and forth about schools, but seems happy at the charter school overall. Apparently, they have the coolest parties, and she gets to take a photography class that the jr. high doesn't offer. Lindsey is still adjusting, but we're confident that in a few weeks she'll have more friends than ever. She really likes her teacher, and getting out at noon every Friday. :) Emily is a happy kindergartner this year. Her best friend from dance and preschool is in her class, so she's super excited. All three are learning Spanish, and Em also gets to explore Chinese and Arabic this year.
Lindsey and Emily are playing soccer, Lauren is cheering. Every single game for all 3 (plus all soccer practices) falls on the same 2 days of the week. It's crazy trying to get everyone where they need to be those days! We've decided to preserve what's left of my sanity by not starting dance or tumbling classes until October when things die down a little. Lauren is also trying out for a school play this week (also on the same 2 weekdays - of course!). She's so excited and nervous!
Maybe I'll be better about posting after this. :)

Wow. I'm really behind on my posting, huh?

Has it really been that long? Time flies when you're busy! So, here's a quick update:
June 12th: Lindsey and Emily had their dance recital - can we say super-darling little dancers? They both did a fantastic job! I'm still waiting for their pictures and DVD to come in, but here a couple pictures of them afterwards. As soon as the recital was over, we booked it to Provo for Chantelle and Chris' reception. Lauren was a bridesmaid, and the little girls got to be flower girls.
June 15-19th: Lauren was off to Young Women's Camp with the stake. She had a great time, but didn't take any pictures for me to post.
June 26th: All 3 girls were in the Lehi Round-up Parade (so both Kent and I had to walk, too). Lauren and I walked with the cheerleaders, and Emily, Lindsey and Kent were part of our ward's miniature float. Luckily, it was overcast and relatively cool, and the rain held off until the very end. We have walked in a parade where it poured the entire time. This was much better.
July 4th: Fireworks and a BBQ with the Walter's - relaxing and fun! No pictures, though. I was too busy relaxing and cooking to be bothered with a camera. :)
Which catches us up to this past weekend and our Abbott Family Campout @ Palisades State Park. We're not really the outdoorsy-types, but the girls have been begging to go again since our trip last summer. Daily. Apparently, our girls are the outdoorsy-types. Go figure. Anyway, we got down there mid-morning Saturday so the girls would have plenty of quality-camping time. All four of them were in their swimsuits and in the lake within minutes (Lauren's friend Kylie came along to keep Lauren company). We rented a canoe for the afternoon, so Lauren and Kylie spent most of the afternoon taking the younger kids for rides or lounging in their tubes. The little girls LOVED the lake! We had a hard time getting them to come back to the camp. Fortunately, Aunt Shawni had a cute chihuahua named Zoe that let them lead it around the entire time. Poor dog. Emily dragged that poor little thing all around camp for 2 days straight!
Kent and I took off for a little while in the canoe, and then for a quick hike to a promising diving rock. Unfortunately, it was plastered with "no diving, no jumping" signs. Kent weighed the consequences of jumping anyway, but decided to be good and just go out to the diving platform instead.
One of the trip highlights was watching the big girls try to wash their hair in the sprinklers. The showers were only available from 5-10 morning and night, so they decided to be creative after an afternoon swim. We didn't bother to point out that the sprinklers were probably using untreated lake water.
That's pretty much the full run-down on our camping experience. We had lots of fun and family-bonding time, got a few sunburns, and survived sleeping on air mattresses. So, I guess that means it was a successful camping trip!

Happy 13th Birthday, Lauren! (a few days late)

WOW! What happened?! One minute my Lauren is a little girl, and the next - a TEENAGER!!! It's truly amazing to watch her turning into a young woman right in front of me. She's so sweet, kind, and fun to be with, with a touch of sassiness just to remind us that she's growing up now. For her birthday, she asked to be upgraded to a queen-size bed because her feet hang off the end. :) Of course, I find it appalling that she's now taller than I am by at least an inch, and she loves that she can reach things way higher than I can. The fact that I can wear all her shoes, but mine are too small for her now is a small consolation....
We know she's getting older, but it's frightening to have a 13 yr old who looks so mature. A few weeks ago, she had a substitute teacher refuse to let her out of class for 7th grade testing because she was convinced that Lauren was a 9th grader just trying to get out of class. Of the 2000 text messages she's used so far this month (no, that's not a typo), most of them are from - gasp! - BOYS! And not just the one she has officially claimed as her boyfriend recently (another GASP!). Kent is about having a nervous breakdown, and Matt seems to be in denial. All of us are wondering how we're going to keep those darn boys away from such a beautiful creature. Kent is suggesting buying guns and ammo.... I don't worry too much, though. She's stubborn and a touch rebellious about cleaning her room and doing homework, but she's also the embodiment of the Young Women's values. She knows who she is, what she wants, and what is deeply important to her.
For her birthday, she invited all her friends to come hang out, paint shirts, and eat! Kent even dug a temporary fire pit in the backyard so they could make s'mores. (Our girls are lobbying to keep it). Nothing is more entertaining than a large group of teenage girls hopped up on marshmallows and chocolate.

I Can't Believe......

My baby sis is now a married woman!!! Chantelle, my 20 yr old youngest sister, married her sweetheart, Chris, yesterday in the San Diego temple. I'm sooo happy and excited for them, but they just seem so...young. Maybe it's because I'm unwilling to admit that I'm getting older, too. Afterall, my almost-13 yr old daughter is one of her bridesmaids!
When Chantelle first told me that she was dating Chris, a 26 yr old programmer and music student, I completely flipped out. WHY was he interested in someone so much younger?! Seriously, I about had my head explode trying not to scream at her to run away - fast! After a lengthy talk with my mom, who had met him, I chilled out slightly. Everyone kept saying how much he reminded them of Kent. (Honestly, that made it worse - I know my husband. He's seemingly sweet and harmless, but has a well-hidden wild streak.)
Then I met Chris.
He really is like Kent's clone, and that's exactly what I would want for Chantelle, and my own daughters. She's a very blessed young lady, finding a man who is that loving, patient, and kind. We all really love Chris, and we're thrilled to have him in our family! He's a lucky guy, too. Chantelle is vivacious and sweet; always in the middle of some major project. Watching them together is like watching a Yorkie playing with a St. Bernard - Chantelle flitting around, giggling and talking, while Chris sits there - content and protective. They're so cute together!
I wish them all the happiness and joy that Kent and I have enjoyed the past 10 years -

Back from the Happiest Place on Earth

Hi, Everyone! We're finally back from Disneyland! After a snowy Spring Break the week before, it was so nice to get away to sunny California for a week. The kids LOVED not having school for a whole 2 weeks, and I appreciated the long break, too. Here's the long recap:
We decided to drive straight through, so we left at 5:30 am Monday morning. Surprisingly, all 3 girls were wide-awake when we pulled out! We stopped for breakfast in Cedar City, then drove and drove and drove until we finally made it to Anaheim around 3:30 pm PST. After checking into the Paradise Pier Hotel, we visited California Adventure for a couple hours before dinner at the Rainforest Cafe. Lindsey had been running a fever since Sunday afternoon, so Kent had to carry her most of the time, but a couple of Tylenols helped. Unfortunately, being sick made her a little less enthusiastic. Our little rollercoaster-lover wanted to go on California Screamin' first, since she was too short last time. That turned out to be a REALLY bad idea. It traumatized her so fully that she wouldn't ride another rollercoaster the rest of the trip - even her favorites from last time. We spent a great deal of time in our hotel room the first 2 days, trying to let her rest. Those were the hottest days, so we visited the pool for a few hours on Tuesday, which seemed to help Lindsey relax. :)
Wednesday was better. She was feeling better, and the weather was cooler, so we spent a lot more time at the parks. Our little princesses got the royal treatment from everyone. They loved it when all the cast members and characters called them "princess". (Note: dressing up little girls in Disney costumes garners you lots of extra attention). The Fairy Godmother gave them "princess lessons", Ariel spent several minutes with them, and Emily got to dance with Mary Poppins in a street show!
One huge benefit to staying in a Disney hotel was the Magic Mornings - guests get into the parks an hour before they open. That was the only way we got to go on the Nemo Subs. Even then, it was a 45 minute wait! Well worth the wait, though. Thursday and Friday we spent the entire time in the parks, only returning to the hotel when the park closed. Everyone LOVED the Tom Sawyer Island! We spent about an hour exploring all the pirate hideouts there.
We visited a number of attractions this time that we skipped on our last trip. Turtle Talk with Crush was so cute, and the Aladdin Spectacular was amazing! Lindsey and Emily lobbied for a second trip to the Tiki Room, but were vetoed by the over-10 votes. Cute, but once is definitely enough. On our last trip, the Matterhorn was the favorite ride, but was beat out this time by It's a Small World. I probably don't need to mention that this was by the little princesses' choice. :)
My only big disappointment was having the fireworks canceled. :( That really made me sad. I also made the huge mistake of choosing "cute" over "comfort" for shoes. I think I permanently damaged my feet and hip joints. Otherwise, we had an awesome vacation!
By Saturday morning, we were happy to sleep in, have breakfast with Lilo and Stitch, shop a little, and then head out. We decided to drive straight through again, so we got home around 3 am. Thank goodness for those 5 Hour Powershots! We had a great time, but it's nice to be home.

More Global Warming, Please!

Is anyone else seriously miffed that it's SNOWING on April 1st??!!! No, folks, this isn't a joke. We have at least 2 inches of snow on our lawn. I took this pic this morning after I picked up Emmy from preschool. If you look reeeaaalllyy closely, you might just see my poor tulips sticking up through the snow.

If I leave every appliance in the house on all day, do think tomorrow will be any warmer...?

Under the Sea with Emily!

Emily had a great Little Mermaid birthday on Friday! They all got a fabulous mermaid makeover, played games, searched for Ursula's hidden treasure (their tiaras), made shell necklaces, and chased the cat (not a planned activity). With cheer try-outs the same week, I didn't go too overboard - no fancy cake, just cupcakes! I did make all the girls a mermaid costume, though. Emily loved having all her friends come, and seemed to really enjoy her party. Lauren insisted on dressing up as Ariel - she's so cute!
I was thinking today about how quickly my girls are growing up, and wishing I could just slow it down for a little while. It's great that they're becoming more independent - and all potty-trained! - but I really, truly miss the toddler stage. Emily is now fully, officially a KID. In a couple of months, I won't even have a preschooler anymore. Of course, I won't miss the $165 monthly tuition, but it's still so sad. I've had a preschooler for the last 5 years!

Speaking of preschool, Emily has loved hers! After struggling with reading the first semester, she went back after Christmas break and suddenly the light went on. Her teacher says she's reading really well now, but is especially good with numbers (that's not from my genes). She has lots of little friends, too. She's always been our shy one, so I worried about her making friends. Apparently, that isn't a problem.

She's also really exceling in dance and tumbling. Her instructor says she's definitely ready for company, and maybe even the more advanced level. When I worked at AAG as a cheer director, she would play on the baby gymnastics equipment. She was only about 18 months old, but she could do pull-ups on the bars and forward rolls. I kinda knew we had an athlete on our hands at that point. :) I decided to teach her to do a backbend the other day. She didn't even wait for me to finish explaining how before she threw herself backwards - I barely caught her before she landed on her head! She practices cartwheels and arch ups ALL THE TIME now, and can do forward flips on the trampoline. I may be in trouble with this one.

What a Day!

Congrats to Lauren, LJHS Pioneers Cheerleader '09! (of course!) She's super excited to be cheering with all her friends again this year. I think I'd better get Kent a shirt that reads: "My daughter and all my money belong to LJHS Cheer!". She wants to try-out for Mac's Allstars again, too. Maybe we'd both better get extra jobs.....
Happy Birthday, Emily! Our cute, sweet Emily turned 5 yesterday, and had her "Little Mermaid" party tonight. Can you believe our baby is actually FIVE??? She had such a fun party! I'll post pics in the morning, but right now I'm heading off to bed......

A Tribute to Club Libby Lu

While scouring the web for Disneyland tips for our trip next month (shhh...it's a secret!!), I discovered that Club Libby Lu has closed. Our girls will be so sad! It was one of their favorite side-trips on our last vacation, and I know they'll be sorry it's gone this time. For the uninformed (i.e., tween daughter-less), CLL is a cute store catering to tween girls with fun stuff and glam makeovers, much like the also-now-closed Sweet and Sassy in Draper. (On a side note, Limited Too has also been closed and is merely a signature line at Justice now. ) At least it's demise will save us about $120 in souvenirs this time. CLL, you will be missed.

Night at the Hutchings Museum

In the interest of magnifying our callings as Cub Scout leaders, Kent and I took our 3 Bears and our 3 girls to the "Night at the Museum" event at the Hutchings Museum here in Lehi. Honestly, I didn't have super expectations, but it was sooo much fun! The concept is much like the movie - the exhibits come to life. A life-size T. Rex skeleton greeted us in the foyer and tried to eat the kids :), and dozens of costumed characters roamed the halls interacting with the kids. We saw Native American dancing, joined the Revolution, talked politics and science with Ben Franklin, and got Dum-Dums from a giant Easter Island statue. I have to say, though, that my favorite experience was when a Minuteman shot down all 3 of our scouts as we were leaving. (hehehe)

Lindsey the Science Girl

Lindsey decided to enter her school's Science Fair, and insisted on making the ultimate cliche - the VOLCANO!
Yes, my daughter is fascinated with things that explode. So, we helped her research volcanoes, build a paper mache model, and make a display board. After all, who wants to be the parent who discourages scientific curiosity? Basically, all she really learned is that lava is called magma before it comes out, and lava flows are pretty at night. But the sheer joy on her pretty, little face when Kent and I took her to the Science Fair last night and she saw her purple participation ribbon was worth every second. She loved demonstrating the awesome power of volcano eruptions for her class today, too. Tonight, we'll get ice cream to celebrate - and start planning next year's experiment.

Monthly Update

I love Valentine's!

Red, pink, flowers, cards! What's not to love?? Over the next few days I'll be busy making 40 valentines for the girls' classes & friends, bake and decorate dozens of frosted sugar cookies, think of something for my sweetheart (officially the hardest person to buy for!), and try to mail out cards to grandparents - all in honor of Cupid! I also need to finish the game for Lindsey's class party and help set up for Lauren's school dance on Friday. So, what are you all doing this week? :)
Nothing really exciting happens around here in February, so I don't have any pics yet or fun things to report. The girls are still doing well in school, and Kent is super busy at work. I've been trying to finish a pile of projects while I have a little free time. So far, I've finished the valances for the kitchen, a cushion for the entryway bench, and Lauren's K-6 school album. Basically, I'm trying to avoid food by occupying myself. :)
I'm looking forward to Spring and getting out into the garden again. I have grandiose plans for the yard this year - more trees, bigger garden, lots more flowers and bushes! Olsen's Greenhouse will be seeing a lot of me soon. Good thing it's right down the street from the girls' schools! I'd LOVE to get the retaining wall done on the lower end, but we'll have to see. A fence would be great, too, but it's an estimated $3500 project - just to keep the neighbors' dumb dogs out. I'd rather shoot the dogs (or owners) and go to Disneyland, but that option is generally frowned upon.

New Year, Same Old Resolutions?

Welcome to 2009! It's time once again to make resolutions and give up on them by February 1st! Hehe. I'm just kidding, of course! But doesn't it seem like we just recycle the same old goals year after year? I know "lose weight" has been on mine for a good decade now. In fact, most of my 2009 goals are carry-overs (catch up on scrapbooks, pay off all debt, exercise daily.....)
I do have at least one new one, though: get a full year of food storage in place. I always think about it, but this is the first time it made it onto THE LIST. Actually, I have quite a bit already, but I'd like to really get it together and organized. I bought this great book a couple years ago called "Food Storage for the Clueless", and it's actually really helpful. My last food storage kick happened back in the summer when wheat prices shot up along with everything else. I got panicked and bought a full year's worth, plus flour, sugar, and pasta. Crazy, I know, but I really do feel better knowing I have it. (I actually own a grinder and use whole wheat flour, so it's not as silly as it sounds!) With the economy the way it is, and the high possibility it'll get worse, now is the perfect time to start if you haven't already. The standard Mormon plan of wheat, powdered milk, and honey doesn't make sense for most people, either. It should be what your family normally eats. For me, this also ties into my other new goal to cook dinner at least 5 times a week. (Laugh all you want, people. Cooking just isn't my favorite.)
